I beleive that this name applies to a cacti species. Cannot find it in my books. Can anyone enlighten a complete cacti novice.

I think you will find that the plants you are looking for are Adeniums

Try googling "desert rose plant'

Adenium obesum, there very easy to grow from seed. And like full sun/part shade. grow in a very coarse,sandy potting mix and not much water because they rot easy. They usually flower pink but theres also a white variety. Can bonsai them!
