Are we as dead as our forum ?

This is the most boring site on the garden web.

If the postings were any slower there would be little doubt that this forum was dead.

Are you all tuned into other forums out of utter boredom.

Australia has its own geography and seasons out of sink with the US .

Can't we at least try to reply to a new posting .

Surely things are happening in our gardens and green houses .

What about a photograph if nothing else.

We might even produce new awareness of plants cuttings or sites that will provide some personal growth.

Here is a photograph of a bit of my garden. is it safe in the frost I am experiencing?

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

I hope I don't have to wait until the next commonwealth cames for a new post or at least a reply.

Hi Baldric,

I must say, I have to agree with you on the speed of this forum. It is slower than the average snail.

I am not big into cactus, I like them but I don't like the needles!

I am more into the succulents. I have a nice little ponytail palm, not anywhere near as impressive as yours. I really started getting into them because of the drought situation, but have found myself getting more interested in them as I go.

I also have a Jack Russell Terrier. She is the sweetest little thing...but mad! How does your dog cope with all the prickles in that garden? Unfortunately, my dog keeps lying on my succulent bed because it is the warmest spot in the garden, so I have a bit of damage. I need to work on a solution.

Cheers,
Dee.

Maybe its too cold to sit around on the computer posting!!??? Too cold to be out in the garden!!!??? My cactus seedlings have gone red -I only hope that they get going again in spring. I have an eccremocactus that's starting to go yellow, looks like I'll have half the garden inside with me...oh joy! Dee-have you tried pet repellant on your garden bed, either that or you'll have to collect all the bits and pot them up as cuttings. I have a mini dachsie that likes to race around so I have to keep my agaves up high. See Baldric... we're still kickin'...a bit?!

Well Julie, I haven't tried commercial repellants out the back, but with my previous dog I found that by placing some of her droppings on the garden, it would stop her lying there. It really works but it looks disgusting! Still, if I get desperate....

My husband suggested keeping the garden moist, but doesn't that just defeat the whole object of growing succulents for their drought resistance?! LOL.

Cheers,
Dee.

Hello,

Great to hear from you both...

However , more is needed not just replies [great though it is to get feed back] we need new posts , photos , dramas , and absurdities, green house warming ideas , new sources of plants , trades etc .This shoulsd with luck re invigorate this forum

deejaus
I think my jack russelis mad to but he understands the meaning of cacti spikes and is a little reluctant to trespass ... perhaps you should plant a few [albeit in your case not for beauty) , . another ploy is to put pepper about or curry powder . one or two sniffs and the dog learns it is not a good place to rest.awkward rocks and sticks may also make the place of rest awkward .. once a habit is broken it is broken .

hello julie nice to hear from you again on our forum . what is an eccremocactus... do you have a photo?

I know what it is like to have to bring our plants inside ... I,have some inside my work office in front of a window with free heating .

I would love a green house that was economically heated .. looks like we both do.

THank you both

See enthusiasm breeds enthusiasum ... just as cacti and succulents need little attention .. so does this forum but similarly nothing really thrives on neglect

RE: Are we as dead as our forum ?

Hello again Baldric & Dee, an eccremo. is an epiphytic cactus, shaped almost like a large sword fern, having small white flowers. I can find nothing about it on the internet but the guy I got the cuttings from said it was to be kept like an ordinary epi.(Paul Forster, P.O. Box 2171, Ashgrove West, Qld 4060. Email: paulforster@uq.net.au if you would like one.) It's in my lounge room under a plastic bag (gas heating!) I'll post a photo of the plant when I get my operating system back...long story! And Dee, the stuff I tried was green goo bought from a nursery, smells very mint\citrus like. It didn't keep the neighbours cats out of my yard but it might work for dogs. I'm sure a bit of doggie-do hidden amongst the plants won't hurt though. Is Melbourne weather cold & miserable too? Here we have fog until noon, a few hours of sun then evening falls, not good succie & cacti weather...3 more months to go.

Julie and Baldric,

I too was interested in the Eccremocactus. As you said Julie, there is very little about it on the internet. Well, after a bit of digging around (to coin a gardening phrase lol) I found that they are now called Weberocereus. I found various names such as W. bradei, W. imitans, W. rosei and W. tonduzii but very few decent pictures. So there you go, you learn something everyday...and all thanks to your original post Baldric. Thanks.

Cheers,
Dee

Yes Dee, been there-done that. It shows no pictures of W. imitans so I can't id it properly, all I have to go on is the name given by the supplier - E. imitans.

Hello Australia ,

I was getting rather sad looking at all the goings on in the Us and elswhere as spring is arriving whilst frost was my visitor ... now i know I am not alone .

I just love the green house julie, and I want one. I will have to take a few photos of my garden . My wife says it looks like an intensive care nursary and for once I agree... ACTUALLY I ALWAYS AGREE.

Welcome habu

BALDRIC

Hello ,

We are on our way to revitalizing this site .

Thanks to Hublu we even have international interest.

I looked at your cotlydon Hublu.. I think this is the most sublimely beautiful flower . The last time You showed it on the Us forum I made a copy for my personal collection. What is its full name , do you have a shot of the full plant... i would love to see it

deejaus
"I have a nice little ponytail palm.. have found myself getting more interested in them... "

Me too I Foud them rather expensive to buy . but on Ebay I discovered that people were almost giving them away in nsw and qld. the problem was collection ... and I'm talking very large plants which I would have thought would sell in vic for $$600 to 1,200. I found the largest listed under pony tails ... yes right among womens pony tail accessories. If I had a van nd the time I would have got the lot . Try looking for "nolinas" the new and correct name or "beaucaria recurvota".

And plannt yours in the ground not in a pot ... they are like gold fish they grow to the size the pond will support.

Whats with the Baldy ... julie ?

Baldric

Nice to see cacti growers can have a sense of humour. I thought they were all prickly characters. Did the polystyrene boxes work out ok?

Hello Australia!

I can understand your need for keeping up your own forum.

Do you have any native C&S species?? I like cacti, but I am not particularly knowledgable about where they are all from etc. I envy you guys for being able to grown them outside, even with difficulties. I have no garden, but even if I did I doubt I would get very far here in England, all the rain would have them bursting at the seams!! And our government complains about water shortage!

Swiss

PS good luck against Italy tomorrow, Go the Socceroos!!
