Newbie simple cactus care

I've never had cacti before and was given a lovely potted collection for christmas. I couldnt tell you what they are, other than free and pointy and green and not so point and green with a red bit.
However I lost quite a few --They started to rot underneith the soil then collapsed inwards. I am guessing too much water?
Can you give me some simple cactus growing tips?

Hi Jaykoko Cacti dont need a lot of fussing over, and yes you have most likely
watered them too much have a look at the link below it give heaps of info.
Also heaps more info on Google lots of photo's on different websites
You may be able to put a name to some of yours. Cheers...MM
