Hi all - what would you do with frost damaged plants? They look melted, if I leave them will they cause the rest of the plant to rot? This is my first winter as a succie grower.

RE: Frost damaged plants

Hello,

My worst fear is frost. I know I am going to cop it on the plant I least expect to.

I think it is terminal ... but if it is only a few leaves, maybe it is not too late ,I would cut them away and cover the plant with straw.

or

do as I am doing with my fingers crossed ... buy some cheap plant protectors ... you know three sticks and a tube of plastic meant to protect plants from rabbits.

You can buy these sleaves and bamboo sticks from Bunnings at a reasonable price.install this over your plant then fold the top over and staple the top closed . That is what I wound up doing and my plants are doing fine even though I have had frost.

Thanks for your post .

RE: Frost damaged plants

Thanks Baldric, I've chopped them down as far as the damage goes (most of the stems) but I think that being kalanchoe they will sprout again from the bottom. I've covered the remains over with old pots. Every night I have to go round and upturn big pots onto the garden. I'm sure my family think I'm weird, all these low maintanence plants being pampered thru winter. My ferns don't need that much fuss. Thanks for the reply..Julez
