Hello everyone, I am a new comer to wonderfull world of cacti and succulants. I live in Cairns and would love some advice on which plants would do well up here. Hot humid summers and beautiful winters. I have about 30 plants bought from markets, nurseries and Kmart bless em. They have just survived their first summer so I must be doing something right.

Hi Kevin
Not a lot of help, I know, as I am in Sydney.

The advise I always give is, If you like a particular plant give it a go. You will often be surprised by what they will do. You will lose some, of course, but don't let that put you off trying.

I have an experimental bed in the front, with Mamms, Sulcos, Gymnos, Ferocactus, Echinocactus, Lithops, Conophytum and others. Some haven't made it, most have and are thriving.

Good luck

Thanks for that any advice is appreciated ,my only worry is the summer rain might be a bit much. My plants are just under cover and have done well. I know sydney gets a fair bit of rain as well, has it not harmed yours.

I know the rains in Cairns can be HEAVY, a bit like Birmingham's annual all in one day :-))

Just make sure that you have GOOD drainage, and protection from the worst of the downpours.

Sydney, in the summer, usually gets a fair bit of liquid sunshine, but the last couple of years has been a bit on the dry side.

Those that I have lost, have been due to slugs (snacking on the Lithops), hail destroying a couple of Echinopsis, a Notocactus magnificus and an Astrophytum myriostigma but of which just never grew (both were rescued from neglected collections).

hey kevin i live in cairns, i grow a few different kinds of cacti but mainly trichocereus sp. i keep my columner cacti out in the rain all year, they have probably had wet soil for about 2 months straight now, they dont seem to mind. there is the occasional outbreak of weeping rot but the strong sunshine clears that up. ones with tap roots will require some protection though as they are more fussy. best of luck growing, also watch out for the massive growth. i get about 1cm+ per week growth on my trichs and i got 60cm or growth in 5 months on a cereus.

Thankyou for all your advice. I feel a bit safer putting them out from under cover.Lorax ,do you grow from seed or cuttings or buy young plants?

i grow from seed, cuttings and buy young plants :D one thing is the cacti you buy will take a while to get use to your condition and the new growth they put out will be aclimatised to your conditions so chances are old growth may go funny colors.
