black plastic on cacti garden bed

| The garden beds in my house had weed and grass growing everywhere, I finally decided to get rid of them and plant cacti and succulents. I want my new collection to do fine, so I want a clean start. I got rid of all the weeds and grass, and killed everything with Round Up, my next step is putting new soil, but someone told me that I should put black plastic first to stop more weeds and put the soil on top. Would the plastic retain water therefore not allowing the soil to dry? Should I put the soil first, then the plastic, then cut holes for the plants and dress it with small gravel? |

I think if you put the weed mat (not black plastic as it is not pourous) at soil level and then built up a raised bed of weed free, very well drained (sandy) soil, then you should not have any problems. Dave. |

Yep, thaks Dave, sorry I meant "balck weed matt" instead of balck plastic. I'll do that, and if I see any weed coming thru I'll spot spray it... Thanks heeps! :) |

You can just pull em out. I don't get too many weeds in mine because I tend to water the cacti fairly infrequently. The little buggers never get a chance to get a hold. Dave. |
