Buds on my Jade!!!

| Buds on my Jade, buds on my Jade, I have buds on my Jade!!! WOW, my first Jade flowers, and the bl*#dy camera's broken! *sigh* It's quite interesting how they've come up as soon as the weather's turned cold out here, I've not held back on the water a bit or pruned them in autumn or anything.
Surprisingly for me it's my smaller Jade that's put out the buds, in amongst a big flush of new growth, but as my bigger one is also sprouting some fresh leaves I'm hoping it will follow suit. I've not fertilised in months, and although they did have a huge pruning in August and a littler one in December last year, they've had none since.
They also had a very rough time at the end of Jan when we moved house and I had to have them trucked out in boxes, they got so hot in there that when they arrived I needed to prop up the stems with sticks, and took a month to recover, so I guess this shows how tough they are!

Hi Lis, Congratulations. I was not even aware that they flowered. Must be the time of year, just checked my old neglected one and it is displaying strong new growth in spite of my neglect. I shall wait with baited breath. Its the small things that make gardening worthwhile. Yes? Irene |

| In Sydney in my experience jade never flowers -- and jade flowers reliably every year as soon as it's big enough! The problem is that there are at least 2 common succulents that go by the name of 'jade'. The one that flowers reliably is Crassula ovata, which makes a rounded shrub as much as 1.5 m high and has masses of starry white or pinkish flowers at this time of year. The other is Portulacaria afra, which can grow to a small tree and which never seems to flower in Sydney. I suspect there is a climatic factor and it may well flower in other parts of Australia such as Qld. |

Or it could be that the stress it's been through has made it think you've brought it to a terrible place where it's going to die, so its trying to reproduce while it can. Tony |
