Insect damage

My succulent garden is being damaged by nocturnal insects, not snails. The insect eats a small circular spot on the leaf that goes brown when dry. I am reluctant to use insecticides as I have gekkoes in this garden, and so I was able to tolerate the damage until the most affected plants started dying. The stems begin the wither and the leaves of the plant stop growing. The insects are more active through winter. I manually remove snails at night but I haven't been able to see what is doing this damage. Snails will eat chuncks of leaves, this damage is more like hail spots.

I don't know what's causing it, but I find that lashings of sawdust all around can deter crawly things, and a few cigarette butts, drowned in the watering can for a few days(then removed before watering) can also be helpful.

Thanks for your advice Jaffa. The memory of foul smelling ashtrays in staff rooms returns! I will have to cultivate a smoking friend.
