Can I do this?

A couple of years ago, I bought one of those grafted cactus called Black Star. You know them, green stems with different coloured balls (or things) on top. Well, mine did just fine. Grew bigger and bigger and even flowered (though the guy at the markets said they were difficult).
However, I've noticed that the ball on top seems to be rotting from where it's joined to the bottom. It's got lots of little ones growing on it so I was wondering if I can cut the main ball off below where the join is now and, somehow, do another graft using one of babies.
Is that possible for a complete brown thumb gardener like me?
Cheers,
Annie

Annie, this is quite possible. Best if you get a book that descibes grafting a bit, but from what I've seen, you should be able to do it. Bascially, if the plant id failing - you really don't have too much to loose.

Thanks for the replies. I felt the same way ie it's dying anyway and I like a bit of a challenge.
I'll let you know how I go.

what is the name of the cacus that u use for grafting on, my boy bought one called lollipop it has a yellow cactus grafted on to a base. it has had a few fall off, he keeps asking me why we havent planted them like the other off shoots we get. he doesnt quite understand that they need to be grafted on to anothe plant to grow.

rootstock is Hylocereus trigonus for the red ball on a graft (gymnocalycium mihanivichii). it is my guess that the same is used for the yellow one.

RE: Can I do this?

Yes they are all grafted onto Hylocereus_trigona,I have the Ruby Ball ,the so called Black Star which is a dark brown coloured G.mihanovichi ,and the yellow one which I think maybe a cereus or E.chamacereus (not sure on this one).
I was going to try and graft some of the yellow one onto a piece of night blooming cereus .The hylocereus dosen't seem to last long. Not that I am a big fan of these plants ,they are just a novelty, and I got them cheap.
