The never ending search.....

I have been doing some searches on edible cacti, and have come up with a few species that I have no experience with and will no doubt have difficulty obtaining. Has anyone grown the following for fruits? What are your experiences? Can you buy cuttings or seed of these anywhere?

Echinocereus enneacanthus- Strawberry hedgehog
Echinocereus stramineus- straw-colored hedgehog
Escontria chiotilla - Jiotilla
Ferocactus hamatacanthus - texas barrel cactus
Carnegia gigantea - Saguaro
With tons of thanks! Jus.

Hi,
Arizona Cactus Garden will be able to supply you with seeds for all of these I think. You will probably have a long wait to get fruit from most of them as they are slow growing. The Saguaro in particular, takes something like 60 or 70 years before it begins to send out branches from its solitary stem. Not sure about flowering but I think it takes something like 40 years before it will flower.
Dave.

Try "The Cactus Garage" do a search for them on google, you will have to email him for a catalogue (he mails them out). Or you could also try Lester Meyers (large variety) who you have to mail for a catalogue. Search for his name on this site for the address.
