Dans Cactus?????

hey guys,
have any of you seen any cacti and succelents in shops with a "Dans Cactus" tag behind them? I've seen some in my local "Action" supermarket , believe it or not, and a few other nurseries. Anyway, my question is , do you think that these plants are real? to me, they all look really fake and way too perfect, and for a minute i thought they were plastic, (but i did a little test and theyre not plastic). Is it possible to grow cacti in an unnatural way do you think?

Cheers,
Beck.

RE: Dans Cactus?????

I have purchased some of these plants ,they seem to be of good quality although Im not really happy with the stones glued around the top of the pots .Also they seem to be in a mix that is full of peat ,way too much vegetable material in the mix.I remove the glued stones and repot into my own mix.

RE: Dans Cactus?????

they also look a bit plasticy dont you think?

RE: Dans Cactus?????

Sure does look tacky .
Paradisia nursery is doing the same to some of thier plants as well. Not sure what the idea is .Seems to hold a lot of moisture in the pot.
I just use washed ironstone gravel around my pots for a top dressing .Nice browns & yellows .

Hi Guys -

A supermarket near me (Sydney) is selling these plants as well. I was bemused by the glued rocks also... however these plants had been around for a while and had developed the "last chicken in the shop" look.

Bit sad :(

so do you think the plants are real?

RE: Dans Cactus?????

Hi
Haven't seen any of these yet so I can't comment. I am against using any sort of mulch on Cacti including pebbles /stones glued or otherwise. Sure they make the pots look nice but any kind of mulch will hold moisture in the soil pebbles included.

Gooday,
I use small stones as mulch. These are seived out of the sand I mix in one third proportions with rich garden soil and a potting medium. I usually use a coarse seive on the whole mix as well - and then use that coarser material (sticks and stuff) in the bottom of the pot after I put in a few pebbles. Works for me. Stationary.

RE: Dans Cactus?????

I have to have some kind of cover for my succulents too so i also put small river rocks as mulch.. in my part of Australia it gets very dry and the water vaporises extremely quickly, one of the reasons why succulents are so good over here!
Never heard of Dans plants either but if it looked fake i wouldn't be buying them myself because I like to see real succulents. I'd go mad if I had to keep wondering whether they're real or fake!!!

RE: Dans Cactus?????

The plants are real enough and of a very good quality.
I got some nice mams (not named which gets m on my goat ).A realy nice aloe and an opuntia monocantha variegatata ,a couple of euphorbias as well .I removed the glued on stones and repotted them in my own mix ,since I have moved back to the Territory they are doing very well.(I shipped 60 plants from Adelaide , that I had collected while down there.)The big problem I have now is the rain we are getting big tropical thunder storms every day ,the sky is overcast for days on end ,and the temp has dropped dramatically , but it's still around 24 -25 C.We do get breaks of three or four days where the temp goes up to 35 or so and the sun comes thru ,raising the humidity to 80-90 %.A lot of my cactii are grown in pots and sit out in the sun and rain ,but I don't want to lose any from rot so I move then under the eaves of the house. It gets a bit much moving them in and out, sort of like the "doting father syndrome". It keeps me out of the pub .

RE: Dans Cactus?????

Glued stone on cactus is a European idea to stop plants falling out of pots during transport. Just imagine the amount of movement a plant is subjected to as it is transported from Perth to Sydney ,Melbourne to Brisbane or New York to Los Angles. The glued stone helps hold the plant in place.

RE: Dans Cactus?????

As I said in this thread earlier ,I shipped 60 plants from Adelaide to the NT where I live ,I used the greyhound bus frieght service ,I never had a problem with any of them falling out of their pots, and not one damaged plant, all of them are doing extremely well .........the glued stones are a bad idea and very tacky...... IMHO.

RE: Dans Cactus?????

I have bought a couple of his cactus, and they are very healthy. I have never seen the glued stones, but mine had 50/50 dirt and this white stuff. As for a mulch I use little white stones on my special cactus. I use Surles Cactus mix straight in the pot. C ya

Cactus 'mulch' glue

Hello,
Does anyone know what they glue the pebbles with? Also, I found in a search, just this morning, ...? something about cactus planted in Plaster of Paris? Has anyone heard about that, and if so, is the Plaster only on the top of the soil, same as the pebbles, or is the cactus directly potted in the Plaster of Paris? ejewls

RE: Dans Cactus?????

i got my first "Dans Cactus" today! no gluey stones, or fake cactus. maybe this was a good one-?

 o
RE: Dans Cactus?????

I bought a beautiful orange pot with three lovely cacti and also did not like the glued stones. I phoned my local nursery and they said it is because of transporting them everywhere.
