how to grow pitaya

ok, stupid question, but I really AM a novice in C&S. Was given a red fruiting cutting, it struck and has grown well, several segments but no side-branching so far. So now it is quite top-heavy.
How do other people grow them? Do I prop it up against a tree, do I try to make some sort of stake and wire enclosure to keep it upright, or...what?

I've heard these grow well in Geraldton which is hot and dry. The person growing them also said that the plant has to grow up something and then droop down again so that it fruits from the dangling bit!! So they need to get to a metre or two before they droop down.
I read some tricks for growing it on this site

ok, late reply, as I have just joined the forum, but if you are still interested in finding out some information, I could offer a little....if you haven't already found out.

first I believe this doco may help (haven't quite read it fully): http://www.jpacd.org/V5P98-105.pdf

I have heard of the idea that the branches need to 'hang down' before they will fruit. I have one that isn't hanging down and is about to flower. Whether there is something picky about it actually propagating properly or not, I am not sure.

In a short answer to your question Alison, you can prop it up against anything that is relatively upright (from the ground that is :) ). So, you can grow it up a tree, along a fence, or on a trellis, or otherwise. Because it climbs anything, with little roots to attach and extract nutrients, it can become quite big and messy looking. So pruning may be in order.

So, consider where you want to plant such a beast, and provide something for it to grow on. The rest is done by the plant.

I won't go into it too much, as you may have found out a considerable amount since your post. But should you want to talk, just email me or post something here.

Cheers,

David.

ps. i'm within your neighbourhood, so i'll be interested in your progress, as I may learn a few things also! :)
