cacti in the garden

Hi every one. It's been such a long time since i posted.

My cacti garden has More than doubled in the last year. They are all in pots at the moment, all on my front veranda.
Because I have no mains water i would like to put some of the bigger ones into the garden. I have to raise the beds first and am wondering what sort of soil to use. I was thinking of a mixture of compost sand and maybe some gravel. Could someone please steer me in the right direction? thank you ;)
P.S. I live in the Adelaide hills if that's any help.

RE: cacti in the garden

Grow them in a slightly raised bed of whatever soil compost you have. Cactus love being in the ground and despite what you read they do like water and won't rot off, even in the winter time in your climate. I am in western Vic. Have most plants out in the ground and the ones I have lost are due to the dry springs and autumns we have had the past years. Trichocereus, Oreocereus, Soehrensias, Cleistocactus should all do well for you in ground. Just don't put them in too small, esp now in mid summer. Best to start in early Spring so they can put on some root growth and establish before it gets too hot. I try to have some dappled shade for even the large cactus for some part of the day, esp over the area where the roots are. Rocks are good for them to put their roots under. Good luck with it. RE: cacti in the garden

Thanks for the tips Joylene. I hope to have my beds ready by next spring. I've got some great cuttings from people. Hope fully I'll get them struck and ready to go into the graound by then. They are all growen locally, so they should do ok. Thanks for the tip about shading the roots. I'll be able to put some shade cloth on the fence so that the ground is shaded at the hotest part of the day.
I'll let you know how I go.
